Introduction... Mai 2013 Après une soirée de discussion, mon cousin me demande de lui fabriquer des haut-parleurs, pas trop gros, performants et pas trop chers. Dès le début je décide d'opter pour un design à un seul haut-parleur. Je proposait au début le Fostex FE126 mais vue la grandeur de la pièce dans laquelle ils reposeront, je craignais qu'ils ne suffisent pas à la tâche. Je me tournai ensuite vers les Mark Audio Alpair 10. Cependant, je suis tombé entre deux générations ce qui a pour effet que la génération 2 n'est plus disponible et que la génération 3 n'est pas encore arrivée. Donc en navigant et en cherchant des informations sur les haut-parleurs "fullrange", je suis tombé sur le site de Common Sense Audio qui offre une gamme de produits qui semblent prometteurs. Je me lance donc en commandant les Audio Nirvana Super 6.5 Cast Frame. Comme à mon habitude, je me fabriquerai également une paire et pourquoi pas, une autre paire pour un de mes amis. Donc, je fabriquerai trois paires de haut-parleurs. |
Introduction... May 2013 After an evening discussing with my cousin, he asked me to build him a small, performing and relatively cheap bookshelf speaker. From the beginning, I decided to go with a single fullrange driver system. I first considered the Fostex FE126 but given it's small size and the room in which the speakers will be installed I had a little hesitation. Then, after a little moment, I looked at the Mark Audio Alpair 10. Unfortunatly, the drivers were not available anywhere at the moment because it's an in between two generations (2nd and 3rd). I was surfing the web seeking informations about fullrange drivers and I discovered the Common Sense Audio site on which you can find a great variety of interesting fullrange drivers. I red some reviews and comments on various sites, I looked at the specs and I then decide to order them. As usual, I will build a pair for myself, and why not another pair for a friend of mine? So here we go with the building of 3 pairs of bookshelf speakers! |

25 mai 2013 Quand j'ai commandé les haut-parleurs de David Dicks chez Common Sense Audio, je lui ai demandé de me fournir les plans pour fabriquer le modèle de caisses "Monitor". Cependant, après une brève étude, je me rendit compte de leur taille tout de même assez imposante, ce qui allait probablement causer un problème. Le but premier était de faire quelque chose de pas trop encombrant. Je lui ai donc demandé de me fournir les plans pour le "Mini-Monitor", ce qu'il fit candidement. Ceci étant dit, étant donné que dans mon cas, et celui de mon ami, la taille n'est pas un problème, j'irai donc de l'avant avec deux paires de "Monitors" et une paire de "Mini-Monitors" pour mon cousin. |
May 25th 2013 When I ordered the speakers from David Dicks at Common Sense Audio, I asked him to provide me the plans to built the Monitor cabinets. After a short looking at the plans, I took attention to their size and finally detrmined that the're will be too big that way. Remember, I was aiming to a small size cabinet. I then asked him to send me the plans for the "Mini-Monitor" and he kindly accepted. Being that said, the size was not a primary factor for my friend and I, so I will build two pairs of Monitors and one pair of Mini-Monitors for my cousin. |

26 mai 2013 Je dessine les cabinets dans Solidworks et je fais quelques rendus. Le modèle d'origine des caisses est fait en matériel d'épaisseur de 3/4". Cependant, comme dans certains de mes projets précédents, je vais y aller avec des murs de deux épaisseurs de panneau particules de 5/8" pour une épaisseur totale de 1-1/4". (8h) |
May 26th 2013 I'm drafting the cabinets using Solidworks. The design is based on David Dicks' plans but instead of 3/4" walls, I'm using two layers of 5/8" thickness particles board for a total wall thickness of 1-1/4". (8h) |

7 juin 2013 Je visse et colle tous les panneaux qui n'ont pas besoin d'être usinés. Certaines pièces n'ont pas été coupées correctement, je corrige donc la situation. (5h)

June 7th 2013 I'm gluing and screwing all panels that don't need machining. I'm also cutting some parts that have been wrongly cut.(5h)

8 juin 2013 Je m'aperçois que j'ai fait une erreur sur le plan de coupe des Mini-Moniteurs. Quatre pièces se retrouvent avec les mauvaises dimensions. Je le coupe donc pour ensuite les assembler.(1.5h) Je trace les endroits de perçage des panneaux internes arrières, je le perce et les assemble ensuite.(2h) Je trace l'emplacement de l'évent sur le panneau intérieur avant et le perce ensuite. Je colle les panneaux avant des Moniteurs ensemble. Pour les Minis, il me faudra d'abord intégrer les insertions filetées pour le grillage.(2.5h) Je place les insertions filetées sur les Minis. Je colle les deux panneaux de chaque face ensemble. Je trace et coupe les évents sur tous les panneaux avants. Je commence à percer les trous de Ø6" pour les haut-parleurs. Cependant, après deux trous, je dois m'arrêter; la perceuse surchauffe.(3h)

June 8th 2013 I did a mistake on the cutting layout of the Mini-Monitors but fortunatly that was on the larger size so I cut the four parts on the right dimensions and then assembled them. (1.5h) I'm tracing the layout on the back internal panels and then drill them. (2h) I'm tracing out port hole on internal front baffles and drill them. I'm gluing together the two panels of each Monitor baffles. For the Mini-Monitors, I will have to install threaded inserts for the grill first. (2.5h) I'm installing threaded inserts on the Mini-Monitors. I'm gluing together both panels of each baffle. I'm tracing and drilling port holes. I begin to hole-saw the Ø6" holes for the speakers. However, after two holes, I had to stop because my drill has became very hot. (3h)

9 juin 2013 Je perce les quatre derniers trous de haut-parleurs. J'installe les insertions filetées pour les fixer.(3h) Je colle les insertions avec de l'époxy et j'appose la laine de fibre de verre en les agraphant sur tous les panneaux qui en ont besoin.(3h)

(2.5h) Mon ami, pour lequel je fabrique une paire, me rend visite ce soir et il veut qu'on écoute les haut-parleurs, il faut donc que je m'active pour les terminer (finition non-incluse) avant son arrivée. J'imprime les tubes, je perce les trous et installe les connecteurs, j'étame les fils et installe les haut-parleurs. Je répète ce manège à deux reprises, je complète une paire de Monitor et la paire de Mini-Monitor, il faut bien les comparer! (4h)

June 15th 2013 I'm sanding four out of six cabinets. (2.5h) My friend, for whom I'm building a pair of Monitor, is coming tonight and he wants to listen to the loudspeakers. I then have to do a lot of work to finish them (not including finition) before he arrived. I'm printing the port tubes, drilling holes and installing binding posts. Welding wires and installing the speakers. I'm doing this twice as I wanted to finish a pair of each kind to compare them together. (4h)

June 17th 2013 I'm removing speakers from the cabinets and bring them to the shop to apply laminate. I'm also painting the ports in black.(1h)

27 juin 2013 "J'aide" mon beau frère de chez Ébénisterie CB à faire le placage de 4 des 6 faces de tous les cabinets. (4.5h)

June 27th 2013 I'm "helping" my brother-in-law from Ebenisterie CB to install laminate on 4 out of 6 faces of all cabinets. (4.5h)

29 juin 2013 Placage des faces restantes.(3h) Réinstallation des fils, des heau-parleurs et des connecteurs sur les Mini-Monitor et sur une paire de Monitor. (2H) Impression des coins et des pattes. À ce stade, une paire de Monitor et la paire de Mini-Monitor sont terminées, j'en fait la livraison à mes clients! |
June 29th 2013 Installing laminate on remaining faces. (3h) Re-installing wires, speakers and connectors on Mini-Monitor and one pair of Monitor. (2H) Printing corners and feets. At this point, one pair of Monitors and the Mini-Monitors are completed. |

30 juin 2013 Impression des pièces manquantes et finition de la paire restante de Monitor. (2H) Le projet est terminé. Le résultat est impressionnant, je suis pratiquement converti au "fullrange". C'était mon premier projet de ce type et certainement pas le dernier! Le projet est complété en environ 60 heures, donc une moyenne de 20 heures par paire et les matériaux m'ont coûtés environ 475$ la paire. Je considère que c'est un excellent rapport qualité/prix. |
June 30th 2013 Printing remaining parts and finishing the last Monitors. (2H) Project is finally done and the results are pretty impressive. I'm almost converted to fullrange systems. That was my first built for that kind of speakers but definetly not the last one. Project is completed in about 60 hours, that is approximatly 20 hours/pair and material cost is about 475$ a pair. I'm strongly recommend those speakers it's a great value for the money. You get an audiophile speaker set for a pretty fair price. |

7 juillet 2013 Il s'agissait de ma première incursion dans le domaine du "fullrange" et je dois dire que je suis agréablement surpris du résultat. Les aigus sont bien présents et définis. Pour les graves cependant, je trouve que c'est un peu mince. J'ai ajouté temporairement un égalisateur analogique que j'avais sous la main que je changerai pour un Behringer DEQ-2496 sous peu. J'ai laissé tous les paramètres à zéro. J'ai seulement ajouté +6dB au niveau du 63 Hz et +3 dB à 110 Hz. Ces valeurs seront sans doute revues à la baisse au fur et à mesure où les haut-parleurs seront rodés.

July 7th 2013 This was my first step into the world of fullrange speakers and I must admit that I'm very impressed. High frequencies are well defined, balanced and no tweeter is needed. On the other side, from my perspective, low frequencies are a little thin. For that reason I add an analogic equalizer I had on hands that will soon be replaced by a Behringer DEQ-2496. All bands are at 0 dB except for 63Hz that I pushed to +6 dB and +3 dB for the 110 Hz. Those values will certainly get lower while the speakers will get broken in.
